Basic Utility Vehicles (BUVs)

Introduction

BUV’s Solution Statement

The Basic Utility Vehicle is a vehicle for change. It is a simple, rugged, low cost, low weight vehicle that is easy to operate, maintain and repair. Designed for rural off-road areas and heavy payloads, the BUV has high torque and does not require clutch shifting. The rural parts of Africa need a vehicle that is “appropriate” for their geography. Such areas have low population density and vast distances with terrible road conditions. BUV’s aim is to provide a vehicle that is safe yet able to overcome the many obstacles in the African bush.

Endeavors

Chris Cox, the one on the right not wearing a helmet, is an engineer from Indiana. He’s training a team to build Basic Utility Vehicles, or BUVs. You can read about it here. Our own Matt Jones is spearheading this project.

Early Test Drive

Abiggo, our Director of Operations in Africa, gave it an early test drive.

The hope is the guys learn new skills, like welding, and can sell these to support local businesses and churches.
